From the Director
Go to [Director Archives]Reinventing RealityHave you ever wondered what your reality is? I’m talking about the reality that you currently exist in which may take a given set of rules, morals, ethics, and principles, but then turn it on its head so that good is perceived as bad while bad is perceived as good and fair is perceived as foul while foul is perceived as fair. This is actually the reality that most of us are thrown into when begin to integrate into society and find that the rules we may have been brought up by or are confronted with once we move into self-actualization are not necessarily the golden rules of good and ethical behavior. We’re born into a world that makes little sense, and develop a set of precepts and constructs as we experience life and mature. However, given all the craziness, wars, and hardships that many people suffer, some of these golden rules take a backseat to integrity and we must alternately learn to survive in a dog-eat-dog world. Plenty of times we have to deal with backstabbers who seem to get the best rewards while those with integrity don’t seem to make the grade. We learn that through competition, many times the good guy finishes last while the bad guy who manipulates the playing field comes in first. When we look at politics and business especially, it’s evident that many times playing by the rule book doesn’t gain us any points and in fact, can leave many open to retribution and punishment. When people attempt to report ethics violations, many times rather than being rewarded, they are blackballed. This creates a crisis for many. They realize that the world is topsy-turvy and they cannot always function from a position of integrity to the point where many become bitter, lose all sense of self, and succumb to the darkness. It doesn’t have to be this way. At the moment, value systems and realities are extremely polarized. The dark side of reality, especially in current-day politics, likes to justify its behavior by saying that it’s God’s will and if God didn’t like it God wouldn’t allow it. But truthfully, we are all given free-will to decide our lives and fate. So God has very little to do with our sense of moral responsibility to ourselves and others. Our moral and ethical responsibilities come from an innate knowing that there is goodness and fairness somewhere in the world. The reality we’re surrounded by may not reflect our values but the reality we immerse ourselves in can reflect our values. The price of immersing ourselves is compromising and accepting a personal role in life that has less to do with ego and more to do with superego or higher consciousness. You may not win the mundane dog-eat-dog competition but you’ll win the high-road, which down the line will make you less apt to lose yourself to the dark. Our reality system is the one that we choose to immerse ourselves in. Our values are those we choose to engage in and live by. When we can look at the dark side and see it for what it is, and then continue on our own path, which may not be the status quo, we have reinvented our reality to meet our highest goals. Those goals have little to do with competition and winning. They have to do with being the best person we can be and being able to live with ourselves without remorse or selling our souls for recognition and power. Reinventing reality means taking the existing precepts and constructs that our crazy world engages in, and turning them back on themselves so that good becomes good and fair becomes fair. We do not need the outside world telling us what our reality is or should be; we can reinvent it and live by the golden rules ourselves. Then we can set an example for others and ultimately change the reality of our surroundings as well. In Lakech, Dawn |
